In my mind, the cable machine is one of the greatest inventions in history. Why do I say that? Well, it's quite simple - it allows you to perform multi-directional, multi-planar functional exercises!
Okay, in English, what I mean to say is that the cable machine allows your body to go through more natural motions. Movements that mimic day-to-day movements or ones that you would encounter in sporting endeavours.
In this workout video, I've shown you 4 such exercises. Feel free to add these cable machine exercises to any of your existing workout routines or do them as their own workout.
The problem I have with traditional weight lifting is that it doesn't necessarily get you stronger or more prepared for life. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of functional dumbbell exercises that you can do but most people simply opt for the same old "chest and back" bodybuilding routine. These workouts will get you "bigger" but that's about it.
But I have to say that I'm a bit biased. Maybe you've already noticed that. After all, athletic conditioning is one of my fortays considering I'm the head strength & conditioning coach for the men's soccer program at the University of Toronto. But the cool thing is that when you look at how athletes train and then apply it to your own training regime you will begin to notice some incredible improvements in all areas of your body and fitness level.
For instance, I've worked with thousands of people whose main goal is to lose weight fast and get in shape. But the neat thing is that the workouts I put them through is very similar to what I would have my high performance athletes go through.
How can this be?
Well, if you want to lose weight, then you need to be using full body exercises that recruit a lot of muscle mass. This video has shown you 4 of these type of exercises. The reason is that the more muscle you involve, the more oxygen your body requires. And since you burn 5 calories for every liter of oxygen consumed, I'm sure you can start to see where I'm going with this, right? Awesome!
So for now, get started with these 4 cable machine exercises that are sure to burn more calories in 20 minutes than most people do in an hour of slow paced cardio. Perform 3 sets.
Diagonal Chop x 10 reps per side
Golfers Swing Follow-Through x 10 reps per side
Lunge with 1-Arm Back Row x 10 reps per side
Stability Ball Crunch with Cable Resistance x max reps
